How do you know if a job interview went well or not?

Is there any clue?

Whenever you hear the phrase "Thanks for coming in" at the end of an interview, it's not a good sign.

The end game is getting an offer. No other "cues" matter.

Usually, they will call back right away to schedule the next interview or they will mention specific, next steps if the interview went well. If the interview goes well over the allotted time, or if you’re given a tour of the offices or introduced to lots of your potential co-workers at the interview, these are all great signs. If you hear a vague reply at the end of the interview, such as “we’ll get back to you”, it’s usually not a good sign.

There are only two ways that I know of as a hiring manager: 1. Wait until HR calls with an offer 2. After the interview and good byes, the HR person asks you to sit and wait for a few minutes in the reception area and goes back to the interview room, closing door. This has happened a few time when I want to make an immediate offer before the person leaves, but it's rare.

Trying to figure out if an interview went well or not is a complete waste of time. You either have a next step or not. If you leave with no clear direction on what will happen to schedule a next step or didn't get one scheduled, you can assume there will be no next step for you. Most of the time you will be right with that mindset. Always do the usual follow up and if they dont get back to you if you left without a schedled next step, then forget about it as it isn't likely going to happen. All that matters in the end is getting the paycheck.

Only one way to know if the interview went well. You received a written offer letter, with a start date and at a pay rate that you are satisfied with. 1. They give you a tour of the office. Big bonus if they enthusiastically introduce you to other people. If the hiring manager does this, I think you have the job. 2. They appear to like you and want to get to know you. 3. It goes longer than it needs to. 4. They ask when you can start or how long of a notice you need. 5. They ask for references during or right after the interview. Huge bonus if it’s the hiring manager asking. If I get an email after the interview asking for references, that has always been a good sign.
