Well it depends on what you want to do. if you want to be a programmer the last classes on the right are useful. the rest is fluff. I'd take some elective programming languages classes like java/C#/javascript/.net and intern somewhere in an IT dept. With this you could apply for entry level programmer position. with this you could also be a techie, and work in the security field. Select your elective carefully and intern in what you want to do.

It's not worthless, but it can't be the only thing you bring to the table. It's only one part of the recipe. You have to also have some combination of relevant certifications, work experience, personal projects, or personal connections. Of those things, the degree might be worth the least, but it still adds value.

I am not sure why you'd think it's worthless. I studied Accounting and taught myself SQL not too long ago. That alone helped me make a huge leap forward with my career by enabling me to get a job that involves working with financial databases. I see plenty of well paid jobs in database management asking for IS degrees. In hindsight, I wish I minored in IS or CS to add as a supplement to my accounting degree. Sounds like you need to learn more about how businesses operates. You'll start to see where your degree and technical skills are relevant.

I have a BS in computer information systems, and don't think the degree is worthless. It can take you in a lot of different directions, depending on what you want to do.

Majority of IT managers and CIOs do not have a computer science degree. They either majored in business, English, or communications, any easy to get out of college degree. They got their shot at being a manager by dorming with the right people and then network. I know countless IT dept manager that were hired because somebody up top was their roommate or friend in HS. It has little to do with the degree. If every IT dept head had computer science degrees there would be no business for consultants or outsourcing.

Info Systems Mgmt is too vague for direct IT application. If you want a career in IT, study languages and particular disciplines. I had a job in IT, and the degree added nothing - it was kind of a joke because it is so vague and became immediately antiquated. Languages and particular hardware, software, firmware designations are much more useful.

You're either a tech or an engineer. Why straddle the fence ? A engineer can always be a technician but a tech will seldom get an opportunity to be an engineer. You have to pick where you want to be five or ten years out and aim for it now.

Not useless but get an internship while you’re doing it to get a foot in the door. the more experience you can get the better off you will be.

Yes, I believe it is worthless. I have a B.S. in Info Systems Mgmt., and I feel it was antiquated before the ink was dry on the diploma. I worked in an IT department, but it was not technical enough to really have value. Just my two cents - and I am old, so my degree is old - it might be different now.

It isn't worthless. Many companies require a degree no matter the experience.

It really depends on the company that is hiring you. Alot of companies have unrealistic expectations that you should have a certain amount of experience, which is all but impossible if you have been in college for the last 4 yrs. While some companies will take you and in train you their way in what they want you to do ad you can make a career out of it. I took a horrible job as tech support for yeas out of college and wasted away my skills, only to go to another company that completely trained me on supporting Networks and work became much better.

You will NEED to get your foot in the door somewhere to demonstrate some kind of on the job competency, so look for internships, side jobs or anything similar that will help you build a bank of experience.

The degree is not worthless at all, in fact in can be very lucrative. It just depends on what kind of career trajectory you are aiming for - System admin, Help Desk, DBA, Networking, etc.
