Penalty for rejecting job offer

I had accepted a job offer and signed the offer letter, but at the end i decided to reject it cause my wife is diagnosed with a critical desease. And to my surprise, HR told me to pay 1 monthsalary as 'liquidated damage' because i've signed the offer letter. And yes it was mentioned in the offer letter too. May i know is there anyway to avoid this penalty?

bring your case to the labour office for advice if you are worried. the best protection is to not sign any documents containing clauses u don't agree with or not prepared to honor

I have a headhunter friend who study law.....according to him, your employment contract only began/ effective when you first day when you report to work....

On my limited and own interpretation of it, for the contract to be effective, TS must work with the company and in return get his/ her salary only the contract to be effective. Since TS had yet to report to work, so, the contract is still not valid, but, merely stating TS agree to the offer letter.

worst case scenario, don't sweat over it, try talk to HR nicely, hope their understand. TS need real real strong and convicing case why you can't take up the offer, I mean your reason due to someone close to you had critical illness (sorry to hear that) that require you to take care and can't travel may not be good enough, as they, HR will most likely counter-argued that why don't you consider this when applying your job?
