What to do with probation staff under hospitalization mode?

Hi I need some advice. Our staff is still under probation period for 6 months. On the 2nd month, he has been under hospitalization mode(67 days until today). No update from him whether he has already recovered from illness or not.

We normally extend the probation as it is not fair to him to be terminated based on his illness. If the illness is prolong, we normally put him under prolong illness clause.

As an employee, he should update his condition to the employer, else it's consider as absenteeism. Or you may check with the "emergency contact" which provided by the employee to see if he is fit to work or vice versa. Don't be to quick to jump to any conclusion. Just my 2 cents.
