Do you use company resource carefully?

During business trip which is paid by company, do you try to find something reasonable or get the most fancy place to stay at?

I tend to treat the cost as if I were paying for it and pick hotels and meals that way. Though honestly I'm beyond the point where if I never travel again for work, I'd be perfectly happy.

I am very careful when it comes to the company's expense. Some people I know though.. are not.

I'm not a mooch and I'm naturally frugal, so no, I won't take advantage if the company is paying for something. I even print on both sides and re-use scratch paper, but I've had co-workers who couldn't care less and asked why I was doing more work by re-using scratch paper to print on.

I act like I'm spending my own money--because, in a sense, I am. If expenses are too high, there's less money for the company to expand, give raises, give bonuses, etc.. It hurts "my home", if you will.

Good timing, I was just working on my upcoming business trip arrangements yesterday. I do try to keep the airfare down, but not if I have to stop in between, and it has to be at a convenient time for me. In this case it's just to Las Vegas, so there are plenty of inexpensive flights. As for the room, I will try to keep it under RM200/night if possible. We are allowed to spend up to RM100/day for meals, but I rarely go over about $75. We are not allowed to buy alcohol on the company credit card, but most of the time on these trips the sponsor/host is paying for free drinks.

I spend like a drunken sailor on furlough. Drinks on the house on me, steak dinners every night, Escalade rental car, the finest hotels with frequent room service, massages, gifts, etc. Kidding! But I do always insist on my daily visit to a gym, so that's my one mini-"splurge" on business trips, sometimes these can run $20 per day. I'll eat less to offset this cost.

Are executives careful with their travel expenses? Let's see if they stay in modest hotels eating cheap burgers or sandwiches. Let loose. Truth is most companies are making record profits while lying to the slaves that they dont have the budget to do anything. And a big reason why is because of you the employee. The backbone of the company who without wouldn't even be in business.

I usually spend company money like it's my own! Anything I can do to save them money reflects well. I don't stay at motels, but also don't splurge on hotels like the W and such. Same thing with meals. I don't eat steaks on a daily basis (or even weekly basis) so why should I change that just cause someone else is paying for it? I have the following policies for hotels: 1) Location 2) Safety 3) Distance / Time Sometimes it's better to pay more to ensure your safety; and if it also means your valuable time can be spent with a customer rather than driving an hour to their site.

I am pretty responsible with company funds, while at the same time balancing the fact that I am traveling at the request of the company. As others note, I use a Hampton Inn or similar hotel as a baseline. I won't go out of my way if there isn't one readily available, but I don't act like a prima donna and require a 4-star property either. I travel coach, but will spend a few extra bucks on airfare to travel on my preferred airline so I can book the FF miles and score upgrades. Although I have never been on an extended three month trip, I would do a bit of comparison shopping to see if one of the extended stay hotel properties made sense. For that length of time, I would prefer something with a kitchen, and expect the company to pay extra for it, as I like to cook. I would rent a car, but it need not be an SUV/luxury model. The bottom line is that if the company wants me to travel, they need to pay reasonable expenses to support it.

Hotels are a bit different, you really need a hotel in a good location to be safe. Companies I've worked for always allowed 4-5 star hotels because they wanted us to be safe while on the road. Typically RM110-RM300 a night (depending on location) would be the guideline.

It doesn't matter how much money my employer has; as a manager it is part of my job to be a good steward of my employer's money.

I typically pick a 'nice' hotel in an area I want to be in. That doesn't have to be expensive. As far as meals, I am allowed RM75 per day. I tend to eat what sounds good to me at the time; by this logic, some days are $75 days and some days are RM40 days.

i would usually go to the cheapest hotel (budget traveller) on overnights... and buy reduced sandwiches for dinner......i thought it was doing my part for the success of the company my peers would order shrimp cocktail adult beverages.......etc.... it use to be if there was a team of us ......we would eat very well,,,,,,,,go to a steak house and some adult beverages....but they have frowned on any adult beverages in the past few yrs..

I'm always careful, and treat expenses as if they were out of my own pocket. I will splurge once in a while on a nice dinner if I am traveling (eg RM50-60), but it's the exception. My usual dinner tab alone is RM15-30. Dinner & meals with clients are different!
