How important is a Master's degree in advancing one's career these days?

Asking this in the context of a non-academic role, mid-career progression, and in a working landscape marred by covid19.

Don’t do it for an expensive piece of paper, unless it’s particularly important for your field.

May give small advantage but easily overtaken by more relevant experience. And you have to take into consideration the time and money it costs to do a masters. The same time can be used for actual experience, and you can use the money to invest in online learning that can set you apart from the competition.

Some companies I know do value Masters and do recommend or sponsor their staff to further studies (with a bond). For today's relevance, I would focus more being "practically relevant" rather than "theory relevance"
